Sources of Whey

Whey is a good quality source of protein that you can obtain from various sources. It is a dairy product that can be made into a protein powder, suitable for consumption. According to the Whey Protein Institute, whey protein is more soluble than casein, another type of protein found in dairy, and is referred to as the "gold standard" of protein because it is so nutritious. Many of the foods or beverages you consume may contain whey.

Milk

Milk contains both whey and casein as its protein sources. According to the University of Guelph, the protein in milk is represented by 80 percent casein. Milk contains only approximately 1 percent whey protein. Protein is an important nutrient for your body and has many different functions including cell repair, formation and repair of bones and muscles, source of energy, and a role in proper body metabolism. Since milk contains only a small amount of whey, you need to consume other sources to get its benefits.

Protein Shakes And Beverages

Many commercial shakes and beverages contain whey protein. Whey is often added to increase the protein content as it aids in muscle building, maintenance, and repair. These protein shakes may be helpful if you exercise frequently and need a quick source of protein to repair the breakdown that occurs in muscle when you use it in during cardiovascular or strength training activities. These beverages can also be a good supplement for people who do not consume animal protein sources or find it difficult to obtain protein from their diets.

Cheese

Whey protein is one of the products that results during the cheese-making process. When cheese is being made from milk, the casein portion of the milk-fat is separated from other components to make cheese. A liquid remains from this process and is called whey. This whey goes through a process that results in a separation of the whey protein from the other ingredients residing in the liquid whey. After a thorough processing of these components, the final result is eventually a pure whey protein powder. According to Beechmaker's Cheese, many cheeses can contain some whey as a natural part of this cheese-making process. These cheeses include ricotta cheese and some Norwegian cheeses.

Protein Powders

You can obtain whey in powder form and add it to liquids, such as milk or water, for consumption. According to the Whey Protein Institute, a concentrated source of whey protein powder can give you the full benefits of whey. These benefits include protein for muscle repair and maintenance. This protein powder is also satiating and helps keep you full. This can help prevent overeating and help you to maintain a healthy weight.
