Teenage obesity continues to rise due to larger portion sizes and less activity. According to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation,15 percent of teens are obese and another 15 percent are at risk for becoming overweight. A healthy weight is important for teens because teens who are overweight are more likely to stay overweight in adulthood.

Weight loss is all about expending more energy than you are consuming. A caloric deficit is created by using both diet and exercise to burn calories. In order to lose a pound your body must burn 3,500 calories. Burning 500 calories a day will help you lose a pound a week. A healthy weight loss is slow and steady because it will last longer. Losing one to two pounds per week is recommended.

Interval Training

Interval training is the best exercise to lose weight, according to the American Council of Exercise, because it uses both the aerobic and the anaerobic energy systems. Interval training requires short bursts of energy followed by a recovery period. Working at a high intensity will burn more calories than traditional cardio exercise alone. An interval may consist of working hard for a minute and then taking a two minute recovery or working hard for 30 seconds and taking a one minute recovery.

Interval training can be done by doing many different activities. Whether you like running, hiking, swimming or even doing cardio machines at the gym, interval training can be done. The best forms of activities use the entire body because you burn more energy when all the muscles of the body are worked. Running will burn calories and sculpt muscles. Running can be done anywhere at anytime. Running with friends is also a motivating way to lose weight.

A slow and steady weight loss is more successful because it focuses on making lifestyle changes with your exercise routine and diet, than a fast weight loss does. Fast weight loss usually consists of a regiment that can not be sustained. Weekly weigh-ins will keep you motivated and help you feel many small successes on your weight loss journey.
