Going to the gym is a great way to get in shape and improve your fitness -- and while the gym is not a fashion show, it is important to wear the right clothes. Certain clothing will allow you to feel more comfortable during workouts, control your temperature and enhance your performance.
Footwear
The type of shoe you choose will be influenced by what activities you will be doing in the gym. If you plan on running or using cardio machines for the majoirity of your training, then you should consider a running shoe. It is advisable to visit a specialist shop to get running shoes, as a trained employee will be able to recommend the right shoe based on your foot shape, running style and gait analysis. Running shoes can cost between $80 and $150 as of 2011. If you intend on mainly weight training, a flat, hard soled shoe is a better choice.
Shirt
The most important factor to consider when choosing a shirt is comfort. If you often get hot when exercising, then it may be best to opt for a vest or loose fitting ventilated tee shirt. If, however, it takes you awhile to warm up, then you may prefer a tighter tee shirt, or a base layer which you can wear under a loose tee shirt. Another good investment would be a light jacket or sweater, which can be used for warming up. Choose breathable gym wear, as this will prevent you overheating and keep you dry.
Pants
During summer months shorts are a better choice for the gym, as they are less restrictive and keep you cooler than pants. You may still wear shorts during winter -- although investing in a pair of jogging pants may be a good idea to use when warming up, or if the gym is particularly cool.
Accessories
Accessories aren't necessary for the gym, but if you want to monitor your training progress then a sports watch with a heart rate monitor can be very useful, as it allows you to track imporvements in fitness, speed and distances covered on the treadmill. Other useful accessories include sweatbands, headbands, running socks and compression shorts and vests.
