Phase One South Beach Diet Tips

Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet is designed to help eliminate your cravings for sugar and starches and help you shed pounds quickly. Phase 1 lasts for two weeks and is the most restrictive part of the South Beach eating plan. Lean meats and proteins are offered in abundance, but starchy vegetables like carrots, corn and sweet potatoes are off-limits; they are gradually reintroduced during Phase 2. Some simple tips can set you off on the right path and keep you motivated.

Pantry Make-Over

Since the South Beach Diet severely limits carbohydrate intake during the two-week induction phase, before starting the eating plan, purge your pantry and refrigerator of breads, cereals, chips, crackers, sweets and other off-limits foods to help you succeed, especially if you are a carb-lover. If the carbs aren't there to tempt you, success will be that much easier.

Make a Shopping List

Once you have cleaned out your pantry, it's time to restock the shelves. Plan meals, but don't forget snacks. In addition to your three meals, South Beach dieters should eat two snacks during the day. Shop for lean proteins like turkey and chicken. Also shop for reduced-fat cheeses, salad greens, legumes and nuts. Make sure you have olive and canola oil on hand, too.

Avoid Hunger

Snacking is part of your hunger-control strategy while on the South Beach Diet. Stay away from fruits during Phase 1, but don't worry, fruits will be gradually reintroduced in Phase 2. Head to your freshly restocked pantry and grab a serving of nuts, cashews or sugar-free gelatin. During meals, do not skip the vegetables. They provide healthy complex carbohydrates and much-needed fiber, both of which help keep hunger at bay.

Supplements

The induction phase is not meant to be a long-term lifestyle. Its primary purpose is to help reduce your cravings for sugar and other carbohydrates. Its restrictive nature means that you may not get all the vitamins or fiber the USDA recommends each day. A multivitamin and fiber supplement will help you meet these needs and help keep your digestive tract regular during the transition.

Find the Right Support

Change is easier when you have support. A diet buddy can provide you with the support you need. If you must go it alone, head to the Internet, where you will find South Beach Diet resources, recipes and support groups to keep you motivated as you sail through Phase 1 and onto Phase 2. Additionally, don't forget about your doctor and dietitian. They are available to answer your specific questions about the South Beach Diet and how it may impact your personal health.
