Patients with Type 2 diabetes are often put on a 1500 calories a day diet in order to promote weight loss as well as control blood sugar. To meet this caloric restriction, you will control portions as well as limit carbs and unhealthy fats. Only follow a diabetic 1500 calorie a day diet if you are recommended to do so by your doctor.
Step 1
Record the foods that you consume and the calories in the food items. You should keep a food journal when trying to follow a 1500 calorie a day diet.

Plan to eat three meals a day and two snacks. This will help keep you feeling full and can also be more effective than grazing when you are trying to stick to a 1500 calorie diet.

Choose low calorie foods when following the 1500 calorie diabetic eating plan. Some sample foods you can eat on this diet include skim milk, whole grain toast, grapefruit, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, fat free whipped topping, low fat yogurt, whole wheat pita, grilled chicken, egg whites, low fat mayo and olive oil.

- Remember to measure out portion sizes when eating a 1500 calorie diet to manage your diabetes. For instance, one fat may equal a teaspoon of margarine.
