Menopause is a natural process that marks the end of menstruation and fertility. It is defined as the 12 months that follow your last menstrual cycle. Symptoms may include irregular periods, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, reduced fertility, mood swings, sleep disruptions, higher abdominal fat and thinning hair. Certain herbs and spices may help treat and relieve menopausal symptoms.
Black Cohosh
Black cohosh is a herb that has been used for menopausal symptoms in women, especially hot flashes. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research suggests this herb may improve symptoms of anxiety, night sweats, vaginal dryness and hot flashes, but results have been mixed. This herb, however, may be a safe and beneficial treatment for women who do not take hormone replacement therapy for menopause. Evidence is still not conclusive and more studies are required. Consult your doctor about whether this herb might benefit you.
Dong Quai
Dong quai, also called Angelica sinensis, functions as a spice, medicine and tonic in Korea, Japan and China. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners use it to treat reproductive problems in women, including painful menstruation. Since information on the safety of dong quai in humans is not extensive, there is no recommended dose. However, research suggests that taking 500 to 600 mg of dong quai as a powdered herb in capsules, up to six times a day, may help menopausal symptoms. Consult your doctor for a dosage recommendation that might meet your specific needs.
Red Clover
Red clover may help treat menopausal symptoms because it contains isoflavones, phytochemicals that produce estrogen-like effects in your body and may relieve symptoms such as hot flashes. It may also help with osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones weaken and you are at greater risk for fractures. Red clover is available as both a tea and in capsules. However, UMMC cautions that estrogen can have side effects, and so the safety of estrogen-producing isoflavones in red clover is not known. Whether this herb can improve or relieve your menopausal symptoms is not confirmed, and more research is required. Doses may vary according to your individual needs, so consult your doctor before taking this herb.
Asian Ginseng
Asian ginseng may improve menopausal symptoms, such as depression and a decreased sense of well-being. Studies on ginseng for menopause are limited and mixed. You can consult your doctor about an appropriate dose for you. It is available as a fresh or dried root, standardized extract, tincture or fluid extract.
