A diet rich in foods that are high in calories and protein is sometimes necessary, especially when diseases are present such as cancer or when a person is suffering from malnutrition. According to the Mayo Clinic, diets rich in protein are normally well tolerated. However they may raise the chances of developing osteoporosis and kidney stones. There is a long list of foods that are rich in protein and high in calories.
Cereals & Breads
Oatmeal, cream of wheat and other hot cereals prepared with milk, butter and sugar and high in calories and protein. Other good sources of both calories and protein include granola cereals, croissants, pancakes and waffles. You may also want to add muffins, banana bread or buttermilk biscuits to your diet.
Fruits & Vegetables
Vegetables prepared with cream cheese, cheese sauce and butter or margarine can add calories to your greens. Spinach, asparagus , squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli , beats, beans, corn and peas are especially high in protein. Fruits that are canned in heavy syrup are a good combination of both protein and calories. Other good fruit choices include coconuts, peaches, dried apricots and prunes.
Dairy Products
Dairy foods such as cheese, milk, eggs and whipped cream can be eaten alone or used as ingredients in other foods to increase their calories and protein. For example you may want to add butter, sour cream or cheese to potatoes. Using an egg or two in sauces, casseroles, breads or cakes can add calories.
Meat & Fish
Beef, pork, chicken, turkey and fish, especially salmon and shrimp, are high in protein. You can easily add calories to meat and fish adding cheese, gravy or sauce. Rather than baking chicken or fish, fry it in butter or oil for additional calories. Spread plenty of mayonnaise or salad dressing on your bread when you make tuna or turkey sandwiches.
Nuts & Seeds
Nuts and seeds are high in protein and calories. They include sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, pecans, hazelnuts and peanuts.
