Step 2
Pinch the mark and your hip bone between your left thumb and first finger. Hold the calipers in your right hand. Open the calipers and place your skinfold between the tester.
Step 3
Press the button on the caliper with your right thumb. Press until you hear a click that locks the caliper in place. Record the measurement.
Step 4
Slide the calipers off your body. Release the pinch on your skin. Re-pinch and repeat for two more measurements.
Step 5
Use your age and measurement on Accu Measure's charts to determine body fat (see References). For men under 30 years of age, your measurement is similar to your body fat percentage. For women, add 10 to your measurement for an approximation of body fat percentage.
Tips and Warnings
- Once you determine your body fat percentage, you can calculate your overall lean body mass. Your fat mass equals your body fat percent times your body weight. For example, if you weigh 200 lbs. and have 30 percent body fat, you would use .30 x 200, which equals 60 lbs. of fat mass. Subtract 60 lbs. from 200 to calculate your lean body mass of 140 lbs.
