In the book "Chlorella," William H. Lee and Michael Rosenbaum describe chlorella as a single-celled, fresh water alga that is one of the earliest forms of life. Its possible that it was the Earth's first green plant, which also holds an abundance of nutrients, such as iron and zinc. Chlorella can now be found in a powder form and as an ingredient in various green drinks in health food stores around the country.
Chlorophyll-Rich Drink
In the book "Power Juices Super Drinks," Steve Meyerowitz writes that chlorella is one of the best sources of vitamin B12. To make a nutrient-rich green drink packed with vitamins and minerals use 1 tsp. of chlorella powder. Juice and mix approximately 6 oz of celery, 2 oz of kale, 2 oz alfalfa sprouts, 2 oz spinach and 1 oz of wheatgrass. This drink contains large amounts of chlorophyll, which may be helpful for treating conditions like anemia. It also contains large sources of calcium and folic acid. It will still be an effective drink if you cannot get all the ingredients.
Super-Food Ingredients
Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe writes in her book "The Immune System Cure" that green drinks are a great source of phytonutrients and fiber in a quick and tasty form. Look for super-food green drinks that not only contain chlorella but spirulina, dulse, probiotics, barley, wheatgrass, alfalfa, sprouted grains and more. Vanderhaeghe recommends several green drink powder mixes that contains other plant extracts along with essential fats, fiber, protein and antioxidants. These mixes may also contain green vegetables such as broccoli, parsley and kale.
Herbal Ingredients
Vanderhaeghe also shares that green powder drinks with chlorella may contain a combination of phytonutrients, trace minerals, enzymes and as well as numerous herbs. Look for such herbs as Japanese green tea, stinging nettles, dandelion, milk thistle, gingko biloba and Siberian ginseng. Herbs such as these are nutrient-rich and contain numerous vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You can find most of these green powder formulas in your local health food store, online or at specialty health shops.
Chlorella Nutrients
Vanderhaeghe writes that drinking a chlorella green drink can be the same as eating five full servings of fruits and vegetables. Chlorella itself is a host to numerous nutrients. Its an easily digestible protein that has a large amount of chlorophyll. It has numerous amounts of vitamins and minerals, such as beta-carotene, B complex vitamins, vitamins E and K, calcium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, potassium, iodine, magnesium and manganese. Chlorella may also help cleanse the body of toxins.
