Ultralight backpacking doesn't mean you have to walk around naked and eat dried twigs. You can still bring all the essentials you need while keeping your load as light as possible. The extreme backpacking minimalist carries fewer than 12 lbs., REI notes, but you can be ultralight with fewer than 20 lbs. of gear.
What It Is
Ultralight backpacking's goal is to hike, trek and camp in the great outdoors with the minimum amount of gear with the least amount of weight. Benefits include increased stamina and less stress on your back and joints from not having to haul around a heavy load. Creativity comes into play as well when you find innovative ways to use your gear or combine items to accomplish a specific task. You can turn your trekking pole into a makeshift oar, for instance, by attaching a flat piece of wood to the end of it.
Ultralight Packs
No matter how light you go, backpacking requires a few essentials. Start with the pack itself. Many packs are designed specifically for ultralight backpacking. Ultralight backpacks usually weigh around 2 lbs. or less. Ultralight packs are generally made of lightweight, synthetic fabrics, but lack metal frames, weighty clips, heavy buckles and the zippered pockets you find on regular packs.
Bare Essentials
Since an empty backpack won't cut it, you also will need some basic essentials: a map or compass, a jacket, gloves and hat to stay warm, sunglasses and sunscreen and a flashlight or headlamp. A small first-aid kit is also a must, as are a waterproof container, duct tape and a multi-tool for repairs and creative inventions. Food, water and a tarp, or other emergency shelter, round out the basics.
Considerations
You can also lighten your load by swapping heavier items for lighter ones. For example, choose a thin sleeping pad you can pack tight rather than a bulky, heavy sleeping bag. Pack a small flashlight with LED batteries rather than a giant light with "D" batteries. Steer clear of canned food; instead bring powdered or dried food and pack water purification tablets.
