You need a healthy body mass index to stay strong and fit, as well as feel good about your appearance. Looking good on the outside and having healthy insides gives women a better quality of life. Understanding your BMI value will help you determine if you are at a healthy weight for your height.

BMI

The BMI measurement helps determine whether you are in a healthy weight range for your height. It is an easy equation created as a screening tool for the general population. To determine your BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide the result by your height in inches. Divide that number by your height in inches again. Your score puts you in the underweight, healthy weight, overweight or obese category.

Ranges for Women

A healthy BMI for a woman falls between 18.5 and 24.9, according to the National Institutes of Health. The underweight range for a woman is below 18.5; an overweight woman has a BMI between 25 and 29.9. A BMI over 30 places you in the obese range.

Weight Matters

Women often have more body fat than men, in the form breast tissue and body fat stored in the hips and thighs. You must pay attention to your weight along with your body fat percentage, because health problems can occur when your weight increases. Among American women, 64.1 percent are overweight or obese. Obesity increases your risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, sleep apnea and depression.

Healthy Habits

Eating a balanced diet and doing regular daily exercise helps you maintain a healthy BMI. Being active five days a week for 30 minutes promotes weight loss and weight management. Eat a diet filled with lean meats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy to increase your chances of keeping a healthy BMI.
