Although effective at controlling symptoms, traditional medications for bipolar disorder can have significant side effects. While the idea of natural medicines may provide hope, exercise caution in how you approach their use, because bipolar disorder is a serious medical condition.

What are Natural Medicines?

Natural medicines can refer to any form of treatment that focuses on wellness and the body's ability to heal itself while avoiding drugs and other potentially harmful treatments.

Warning

If untreated, bipolar disorder can lead to suicide. Relying on natural medicines may not be enough to ensure the safety of someone with bipolar disorder.

Research

Some supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids in a dose of 1 to 3 mg a day, have shown promise in treating bipolar disorder. Others, however, such as S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe), might potentially lead to mania.

Alternative Medicine

Acupuncture and massage may provide relief and have few, if any, negative side effects.

Talking Cures

Psychotherapy and peer support can have tremendous benefits. NAMI offers support groups and a recovery education program called Peer to Peer that can help you learn skills to deal with your disorder.
