Low-Calorie Hypothyroidism Diet

Hypothyroidism is a medical condition characterized by an underactive thyroid gland. If a person has hypothyroidism, the gland will fail to produce enough of the hormones that control metabolism. Besides taking medication to replace the hormones, a low-calorie diet can be followed in order to help the patient lose weight. Make sure you speak to a doctor before changing your diet.

Step 1

Eat low-calorie protein foods. Protein sources that are low in calorie can help give you energy and make you feel full longer. Patients with hypothyroidism often feel tired, and eating a higher-protein diet can combat this problem. Some low-calorie protein sources include tofu, egg whites, lean cuts of beef, skinless chicken, turkey breast and fish.

Step 2

Limit your carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can elevate the blood sugar of patients that have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Elevated blood sugar can cause you to feel hungry and overeat. White breads, rice and pasta are often high in carbs as well as calories. Instead, complex carbs should be consumed in moderation, and can include wheat bread, oatmeal and brown rice.

Step 3

Consume low-fat versions of milk and cheese. Skim milk, low-fat milk and reduced-fat cheeses are not only lower in calories, but may also relieve symptoms of hypothyroidism since they are rich in essential amino acids.

Step 4

Switch your beverage choices. When you have thyroid disease, one of the symptoms is increased thirst. Instead of consuming high-calorie soft drinks and fruit juices, drink a large amount of water throughout the day. Aim to have at least six to eight glasses per day.
