Eyelashes frame and accentuate the eyes, giving them definition. Sparse eyelashes can occur due to illness, stress, poor nutrition, aging and genetics. Currently, there are several pharmaceutical products marketed for increasing the length and thickness of eyelashes. However, several key vitamins and minerals that promote hair growth also help to thicken the eyelashes. These nutrients are important for several body functions and must be obtained through a balanced diet as well as supplements when necessary. Taking these vitamins and minerals regularly can result in long, lush eyelashes over time.

Step 1

Take specific B vitamins that help promote hair growth of the eyelashes and on the scalp. Take 100 mg of vitamin B-5, or pantothenic acid and 50 mg of biotin. These essential vitamins are commonly found in supplements for the hair and skin and help your metabolism to provide nutrients for hair growth. Take 50 mg of vitamin B-12, which plays a key role in red blood cell or erythrocyte production to increase circulation to the eyelashes for healthy growth. A vitamin B complex may not contain these concentrations; it is best to take individuals vitamins.

Step 2

Take a dosage of up to 10,000 mg of vitamin C per day. This water-soluble essential nutrient is a powerful antioxidant and is necessary for the absorption of iron from food. This helps to increase circulation to the eyelashes and other areas for improved growth.

Step 3

Take a daily dose of 400 international units, or IUs, of vitamin E to thicken the eyelashes. This fat-soluble vitamin increases blood circulation to deliver nutrients and oxygen to the head and eyelids for thicker eyelash growth.

Step 4

Take mineral supplements that contain iron, copper, selenium and zinc. These minerals are important for hair growth to improve eyelash thickness. Go with the European standard recommendation of 14 mg of iron per day in total from both foods and supplements. Ingest the other minerals as per the recommended daily dosage on the labels.

Tips and Warnings

  • Eat a balanced diet in addition to taking nutrient supplements. Vitamins and minerals obtained from natural foods are more easily absorbed by the body than supplements.
  • Consult your doctor or nutritionist before taking vitamins and minerals. Excess levels of these nutrients can be toxic. While iron is important to thicken eyelash and promote healthy hair growth, too much ingested iron can lead to hair loss, according to the Belgravia Hair Center.
