Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, or chemical messenger, which is produced in low levels in the brain. Though only 0.3 percent of the brain's neurons produce this chemical signal, it has powerful effects on mood and behavior. Dopamine is considered to be a "pleasure chemical" because increased activity of this neurotransmitter is linked to the sensation of pleasure and joy. Low levels of dopamine can lead to depressed moods, lack of motivation, poor attention, low concentration and inability to experience happiness. Certain foods can naturally promote the production and levels of this neurotransmitter.

Step 1

Eat foods that contain the amino acid tyrosine. These include bananas, avocados, almonds, dairy products, lima beans, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Tyrosine is a building block for the protein molecules that make up dopamine and other neurotransmitters. These foods help replace dopamine levels for increased alertness, concentration and a cheerful mood.

Step 2

Eat beets as part of a balanced diet to increase dopamine levels. This vegetable contains an amino acid called betaine, which stimulates the production of S-adenoslmethionine, or SAM-e, which is needed for the production of dopamine.

Step 3

Add nutmeg to foods to increase dopamine in the brain. This spice naturally inhibits monoamine oxidase, or MAO, which breaks down dopamine. Nutmeg helps to increase pleasure by promoting higher levels of this neurotransmitter in the brain.

Step 4

Add wheat germ and wheat germ-containing foods to your diet. This is a rich source of phenylalanine , an essential amino acid that is converted to another amino acid tyrosine, which is needed to produce dopamine in the brain.

Tips and Warnings

  • Protein-rich foods such as eggs, cheese and meats are important to increase the production of dopamine and other neurotransmitters in the brain.
  • Some anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications also increase the production of dopamine in the brain. Consult your doctor about the correct dosages for these medications as excess dopamine can adversely lead to anxiety and mood problems.
