Water makes up approximately 60 percent of the human body, according to the Mayo Clinic, and every system relies on water to function properly. It is important to drink an adequate amount of water daily to replace what is lost and stay hydrated.
Protection
Water keeps the tissues of the body--including the eyes, nose, mouth and skin--lubricated and supple. It also cushions the joints and protects vital organs.
Carrying Nutrients
Water helps break down minerals and other nutrients so they can be sent to other parts of the body. These nutrients, along with oxygen, are carried through the bloodstream.
Hydration
A lack of water causes dehydration, which can cause fatigue and lack of concentration in its mildest form and seizures, kidney failure, coma or death in extreme cases.
Daily Intake
The amount of water required per day varies from person to person, but the Institute of Medicine advises women to drink about nine cups and men to drink about 13 cups of liquids a day.
Getting Enough Water
Although drinking plain water is the best choice, you can get your daily intake from a number of sources, including milk, juice, fruits and vegetables or soups.
