According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2008, 34 percent of American adults were obese. Extra weight can lead to health problems including diabetes, heart disease and depression. People give many reasons for failing to lose weight. From health issues to personal problems to budgetary struggles, it's not difficult to find a reason for lack of weight loss.

Too Busy

People often say they have no time to exercise. Either they claim to be too busy working, taking care of family members, running errands or managing day-to-day responsibilities. It's easy to blame a lack of weight loss on a lack of time. However, it's not difficult to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Walking for 10 minutes during a lunch break, waking up 10 minutes earlier to get in a few pushups or parking away from the grocery store's front door are a few ways to squeeze exercise into an otherwise packed day.

Tight Budget

People sometimes say that they can't lose weight because they can't afford a gym membership or expensive exercise gear. They may also claim that low-fat foods cost more money. However, there are ways to exercise for free. Walking outside, and doing situps or pushups in your home are free. If you have a television set, there are often exercise shows on the schedule that you can participate in from your living room.

Sometimes, physician's offices have exercise equipment that they allow their patients to use. Talk to your doctor about any options he may be able to make available to you.

Eating well doesn't have to cost money, either. In fact, eating smaller portions of your regular foods can help you save money and consume fewer calories. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is one of the healthiest ways to eat. Gardening only costs the price of the soil and the seeds.

Slow Metabolism

People sometimes attribute a lack of weight loss to a slow metabolism. Metabolism is the process your body goes through to convert the calories you consume into energy. The Mayo Clinic says slow metabolism is most likely not a reason for obesity or unhealthy weight. If you are concerned that metabolism may be to blame for an inability to shed pounds, speak to your physician. You may be suffering from a metabolic disorder, such as hypothyroidism, which can alter your body's metabolic rate.

Poor Genetics

Some people say losing weight is a struggle due to a poor genetic disposition. They claim inherited genes make it difficult to lose weight and keep it off. There are genetic disorders that can cause people to struggle with their weight. Though genes can play a role in a person's weight loss, the CDC states that behavior and the environment also play a role in a person's weight and health. A geneticist may help you determine if genetics are to blame for a weight issue.
