Losing weight can be a long, arduous process, depending on how much you have to lose. Among the multiple diet plans and programs out there, a few dieting tips remain common. Help recharge your weight-loss efforts and get back on track to meeting your goal by applying some common sense advice.

Change Your Diet Gradually

Changing your diet habits from those of a fast-food junkie to a health nut overnight isn't realistic. Make gradual changes in your diet for the best results. You don't have to give up your favorite foods immediately when you decide to start losing weight, just scale back on them over time. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, any diet that reduces calories will help you lose weight, regardless of how much fat or carbohydrates make up the diet. Focus on eating less at first, then switching to healthier foods over time.

Set Informed Goals

Losing 75 lbs. may sound like an exciting, ambitious goal, but it may not be the most realistic one for your body. While losing 20 lbs. may be reasonable for where you're at now, losing it within two weeks isn't realistic either. Talk to your doctor before starting any weight loss, diet or exercise program. Your doctor can help you come up with a realistic amount of weight you should lose. Plan on losing between 1 to 2 lbs. per week, the healthiest rate of weight loss, according to MedlinePlus.

Don't Skip Meals

It's incredibly tempting when you're trying to lose weight to skip the occasional meal and save the calories, but you may be doing your diet more harm than good. Skipping meals not only slows down your metabolism, but it also makes you hungrier at your next meal, which can lead to overeating. Make breakfast a priority every day soon after you wake up. You'll get your metabolism kick-started at the beginning of the day and avoid cravings around mid-morning and lunchtime. Pack healthy snacks with you throughout the day to fight those occasional cravings.

Beware Low- and Non-Fat Foods

Once you've gotten on the healthier foods bandwagon, including low- and non-fat foods, its important not to go overboard. It's easy to focus on what foods don't have in them, such as fat, and forget the calorie content of the food you're eating. Even if a food is labeled as non- or low-fat, that doesn't mean its necessarily calorie-free. In fact, some lower-fat versions may contain more calories than their regular counterparts, according to the National Institutes of Health. No matter the health claims on the front of the packaging, always check the food label to find out the complete nutritional profile of the food you're eating.
