Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes an overgrowth of skin cells, leading to scaly or itchy patches of skin. It is a chronic disease with no cure, but there are ways to manage and control symptoms that may vary among each person. There are lifestyle alterations you can take to minimize psoriasis symptoms. If you have psoriasis, talk with your doctor about whether diet changes may benefit you.

Step 1

Eat fatty fish or take an omega-3 fatty acid supplement. Fatty fish contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential fatty acids that the body needs but does not naturally produce. Although study results are mixed, omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce psoriasis symptoms when taken with standard medications.

Step 2

Eat a diet that emphasizes fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean meats and fish. A diet like this can also help you maintain a healthy weight, which can reduce psoriasis symptoms and improve the effectiveness of your psoriasis medication.

Step 3

Explore the foods seem to trigger psoriasis symptoms. The National Psoriasis Foundation states that some people find a wheat allergy causes symptoms, while others may be triggered by red meat or fatty foods. When you find food that aggravates your symptoms, eliminate it from your diet and see if your symptoms improve.

Tips and Warnings

  • Stress can also cause psoriasis symptoms, so try to keep your stress under control. Seek out a personal support system, practice meditation or yoga, and participate in activities you enjoy.
  • Talk to your doctor about whether diet modifications may benefit your psoriasis symptoms. These may not work for everyone, so do not stop your medication, if you take any, for your condition.
