Aciphex is the brand name for rabeprazole, a medication prescribed for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Drugs.com states that it is also used to treat other conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome or to promote the healing of damage done to the esophagus from chronic stomach acid exposure. As with any medication, Aciphex has the potential for side effects.
Less Serious Side Effects
Most individuals experience mild side effects, if any. Drugs.com identifies these side effects as headaches, upset stomach, diarrhea, insomnia, nervousness, itching or a skin rash. If these side effects are persistent or extremely bothersome, Drugs.com suggests contacting your doctor. RxList.com suggests other side effects to include dry mouth, dizziness, vomiting, nausea and flatulence.
Serious Side Effects
RxList.com indicates that most of the serious side effects associated with Aciphex do not occur in many patients. The possible hazards include sore throat, pain in the abdominal area, secondary infection, swelling of body tissues, hepatic enzyme increase, inflammation of the liver, pain in the muscles and/or pain in the joints. In rare cases, the use of Aciphex can lead to hepatic encephalopathy, a brain dysfunction caused by liver disease.
Allergic Reaction
Any signs of allergy should be reported to a medical doctor. Some users may require emergency medical treatment for allergic reactions including hives, trouble breathing, swelling of the mouth, swelling of the face, swelling of the tongue or swelling of the throat. This is known as anaphylactic shock and can be fatal.
Contraindications
RxList.com warns against the use of Aciphex in pregnant or nursing women due to potential negative affects to the fetus or infant. Aciphex is often used with antibiotics. RxList.com suggests that this can increase the chances of developing colitis.
