Side Effects of Lactimil

Lamictal, also known generically as lamotrigine, is part of a drug family referred to as anticonvulsants. It is prescribed to those who are diagnosed with epilepsy to manage their seizures. According to Drugs.com, it is also manages mood swings in adults diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Before using this medication as part of your treatment plan, learn about its side effects first.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects of Lamictal occur in 20 to 54 percent of patients taking it. These side effects include dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, vomiting, double vision, loss of coordination and nausea.

Less Common Side Effects

While these are considered to be common side effects, they affect 5 to 20 percent of patients. These side effects include drowsiness, sore throat, stomach pain, tremors (uncontrollable shaking), back pain, flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills and body aches, painful menstrual cramps, diarrhea, dry mouth, chest pain, runny nose, cough, insomnia, general weakness, fatigue, indigestion, heartburn, bronchitis, constipation and weight loss.

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects, though infrequent, may pose a serious health risk when they occur. For this reason, notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: a worsening of your seizures, unusual bruising or bleeding, severe muscle pain, depression, thoughts of suicide, anxiety, signs of liver damage such as jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes) and signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of your lips, face or throat, difficulty breathing, an unexplained rash or the onset of hives.

Rare Side Effects

Rare side effects occur in less than 5 percent of patients taking Lamictal. These side effects include vaginal or bladder infection, joint pain, neck pain, a sensitivity to the sun, vertigo (a spinning sensation), an increased sex drive, dry skin, migraines, speech or concentration problems, loss of appetite, nervousness, sinus infections, memory loss, bloody noses, increased sweating and weight gain.

Signs of an Overdose

Signs of overdose include blurred vision, increased seizures, fainting, loss of coordination and feeling light-headed. Drugs.com recommends seeking emergency medical attention if you believe you have taken more Lamictal than necessary.
