Forteo, known also as teriparatide, is a synthetic form of parathyroid hormone, which is made naturally made by the human body. It is prescribed for both men and women who suffer from osteoporosis to strengthen bones and prevent fractures. While it has many benefits, it has many side effects as well. Before taking Forteo, learn about these side effects and be certain this is the right drug for you.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effects of Forteo occur in 6 to 14 percent of people taking it. These side effects include nausea, runny or stuffy nose, dizziness, cough, joint pain, general weakness and gastritis (an inflammation and irritation of the stomach).
Less Common Side Effects
The following are still considered common side effects; however, they occur in 2 to 6 percent of patients. These side effects include sore throat, indigestion, heartburn, insomnia, shingles, vomiting, chest pain, constipation, diarrhea, anxiety, vertigo (a spinning sensation), leg cramps and increased perspiration.
Serious Side Effects
Although these side effects do not occur frequently, they can have severe health repercussions and need to be reported to your doctor immediately. These side effects include fainting and symptoms of hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood), which include nausea, vomiting, feeling lethargic, constipation and muscle weakness. Bone cancer and allergic reactions are other possibilities. Signs of this include wheezing; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, throat, lips and tongue; itching; an unexplained rash; and hives.
Signs of Overdose
You can overdose if you take too much Forteo. Signs of overdose include nausea, dizziness, feeling light-headed, vomiting, headache and fainting. If you experience any of these, seek emergency medical attention.
