Cloderm is one of many brand names for a topical corticosteroid cream with the generic name clocortolone pivalate. It treats problems in skin integrity such as eczema, allergy outbreaks in the skin, rashes and dermatitis. It reduces the skin irritation associated with the swelling, itchiness and redness of the skin conditions being treated. Cloderm is a medium-strength corticosteroid. This medication is only to be used on the skin and not internally. It should not be used on the face, in the groin or under the arms unless prescribed as such by a physician.
Serious Side Effects
Some side effects of Cloderm may be potentially serious. Call your physician as soon as you can if you get any of them. These types of possible serious side effects include blisters that contain blood on your skin; areas where the skin thins with easy bruising; skin itching; infection of the skin; skin burning sensations; skin spots on the face that appear like warts, are raised above the skin and are dark red in color; more sensitivity in the skin than normal for you; hair follicle blisters that contain pus and are itchy, red or painful; and finger numbness.
Non-Serious Side Effects
Cloderm also may cause a few non-serious, temporary side effects. These types of side effects do not last past the initial use of Cloderm or other topical corticosteroids, but contact your physician if they do. They may include a rash on the skin, skin redness, increases in the overall red color or scaling of sores on the skin, itching, a burning sensation or the skin, irritation of the skin, dryness of the skin and a momentary stinging sensation when you apply the aerosol, gel, solution or lotion of this corticosteroid.
Other Side Effects
The use of the medication also may cause dizziness that is severe; shortness of breath; swelling of the face, tongue and throat including redness; and a sensation of the throat closing with difficulty swallowing. Others include stretch marks, skin discoloration, unwanted hair growth and hair bumps known as folliculitis. Also, if you absorb too much Cloderm, you may get what RxList.com calls reversible conditions such as hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression and hyperglycemia, which is too much glucose in the bloodstream similar to diabetes.
