The compound 5-hydroxytryptophan, or 5-HTP, is found primarily in the brain. The compound is manufactured from an essential amino acid called tryptophan and has been shown to be useful in conditions characterized by serotonin deficits, especially depression, anxiety and weight loss. It acts similar to antidepressants, which are designed to raise serotonin levels. The supplement should always be taken under the supervision of a doctor.

Function

In the brain, 5-HTP is converted to an important neurotransmitter called serotonin. Intake of 5-HTP leads to higher serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin, also called 5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT, plays an important role in anxiety and weight loss.

5-HTP for Weight Loss

A study published in November 1992 in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" examined the effects of 5-HTP in 20 obese patients. Researchers administered 5-HTP at a dosage of 900 mg per day in each obese patient for two consecutive six-week periods. The results showed that 5-HTP reduces craving for carbohydrate, which in turn reduces calorie intake and increases weight loss. These findings suggest that 5-HTP may be safely used as a weight loss supplement.

5-HTP for Anxiety

A 2002 study from the Behavior Institute at the University of Maastricht examined the effects of 5-HTP administration in individuals with panic disorder, a form of anxiety. The experiment, which involved a panic challenge, included 24 panic disorder patients and 24 healthy volunteers. Researchers administered 200 mg of 5-HTP to all 48 volunteers. The results of the panic challenge showed that 5-HTP significantly reduced the reaction of panic and number of panic attacks in panic disorder patients. The healthy volunteers did not show any effect with 5-HTP. The study suggests the use of 5-HTP supplements treat the symptoms of anxiety.

Side Effects

Life-threatening side effects have not been reported with people taking 5-HTP for weight loss and anxiety. However, nausea, vomiting, nightmares and constipation have been reported. It is best that you only take 5-HTP supplements under the supervision of your physician.
