If you have limited space to store a bicycle or if you frequently travel and wish to take your bike along, then a folding bike might be the perfect solution. Folding bikes are compact enough to store in the trunk of a car, to carry on a subway and to pack in a suitcase when you fly. They are also an environmentally sound means of transportation.

Folding Bicycles

Folding bikes are designed for all of the parts to compactly fold together. This is opposed to a breakaway bike, which separates into pieces. Like full-sized bikes, folding bikes come in a variety of frame materials. Generally, folding bikes have a more rugged ride, and are made to be durable commuting machines. As with any bike, it's recommended that you first take it for a test ride at your local bike shop to ensure that the fit is good and the bike is comfortable for you.

One Size Fits All

Most folding bikes come in one size, meaning the frame size will be the same for every bike. This is unlike a traditional full-size bike that comes in several sizes and includes special sizing for women. Folding bikes, however, have seat posts and stems that are highly adjustable. The seat post alone is long enough to comfortably accommodate a tall rider, yet folds down small enough for a shorter rider. The wheel base and traditional measurements between seat, top tube and bottom bracket are similar to those of a full-size bike.

Bikes to Consider

Consumers should purchase a bike that fits their riding needs. For example, a bike used for commuting doesn't need to be the lightest available, but additional equipment like panniers and fenders will make the ride more enjoyable. Two companies that make less-expensive models of folding bikes are DAHON and Xootr. DAHON has models priced from about $600 to $900 and the Xootr is $749. The Schwinn Loop is also a value priced bike for commuters and a nylon bag is included with the bike. The Loop also has seven speeds and alloy brakes.

Other Folding Bikes

Not all folding bikes are designed for the road. The DAHON Matrix is a full size folding mountain bike. If you're riding on rough roads, a bike by Birdy contains full front and rear suspension. For those concerned with performance, Bike Friday makes a folding bike with 20-inch-wheels that fits in a suitcase. For a unique ride, the Strida is a triangle-shaped bike with a Kevlar belt drive, which means no greasy chain to rub off on clothing. The bike weighs just over 20 pounds and unfolds in seven seconds.
