Peruvians of the high Andes use maca root, Lepidium meyenii, as an energizing food source, aphrodisiac and remedy for infertility. Taking maca root extract may help to alleviate reproductive dysfunction and improve sexual satisfaction. Maca root extract may also reduce your anxiety levels and and improve your sense of well-being. Maca root is a nutritious food and it may confer a beneficial effect on endurance.
What is Maca Root Extract?
Maca grows in the wild between 11,000 and 14,000 ft. in the central Peruvian Andes. The root of the maca plant is similar in appearance to a thick parsnip or turnip. Growers typically prepare and sell maca root in a dried and ground form. You can purchase maca root either loose or in capsules, as a flour and as a liquid extract.
Benefits for Reproductive Health
Scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital found that maca root extract may help women with sexual dysfunction caused by SSRI's, a commonly prescribed class of anti-depressants. Study participants reported enhanced libido and improved sexual satisfaction while taking maca root powder. In another study, scientists studying the effect of maca root extract on men with mild erectile dysfunction reported an improvement in "general sexual well-being." Additional sexual-health benefits of maca root extracts for men include increased sperm motility, sperm production and semen volume.
Typical Dosage
Scientists believe that the positive effects of maca root extract on sexual health may increase with dosage size and prolonged consumption. Researchers have used doses ranging from 1.5 g to 3 g per day in various studies. However, no safe upper level for maca root extract is available in the literature. Consult with your physician before beginning to take maca root extract, especially in doses exceeding 3 g per day.
Other Uses of Maca Root
Besides improvements in sexual health, maca root extracts may enhance other facets of health and well-being. Clinical trials in Peru suggest maca root may improve mood and alleviate anxiety. Maca root also excels as a nutritious food source. Studies on rats support the anecdotal claims of many Peruvians that maca improves endurance. Additionally, maca root is rich in protein for a tuber and is higher in iron and iodine than the typical potato.
