The grapefruit diet became largely popular in the 1930s with the Hollywood population and has been around in various forms ever since. Commonly referred to as the Mayo Clinic diet, this diet is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the Mayo Clinic. When eaten three times a day, the grapefruit contains enzymes that are believed to burn fat. The grapefruit diet is a fad diet not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Salads are a common meal when following the grapefruit diet.
The Mayo Clinic Diet
One variation of the grapefruit diet is the Mayo Clinic diet. However, not even the Mayo Clinic is aware of how its name became associated with this diet, which is a 12-day plan. Salads are incorporated at lunch and dinner with the Mayo Clinic diet. At lunch, you should mix 8 ounces of grapefruit juice--or a half a grapefruit--with salad, light dressing and lean meat. At dinner, a half of grapefruit should be eaten with salad or greens mixed with red vegetables and meats.
The Hollywood Diet
The Hollywood diet is another variation of the grapefruit diet. This diet lasts for 21 days and follows a strict meal schedule including salads at dinner time. Your dinner should include a half of grapefruit, two eggs, tomato and half a head of lettuce. The calories consumed during the Hollywood diet total less than 800 per day. Other foods on this diet plan include cucumbers, toast, coffee and tea.
The New Mayo Clinic Diet
In 2007, a modified version of the Mayo Clinic diet was released on the Internet from an undetermined source. You follow this diet for 12 days, take a break for two days and then continue the diet as long as desired. At lunch, you should consume a half of grapefruit with a salad or raw vegetables. If you use salad dressing, it should be low-fat or fat-free. For dinner, you should eat a half a grapefruit--or consume 8 ounces of grapefruit juice. This should be mixed with a salad that may contain dressing, vegetables and meat. Butter may be used, and you can cook the meat anyway you desire.

Your choice of salad should always contain grapefruit or grapefruit juice. You can also choose from red onions, green onions, tomatoes, broccoli, green bell peppers, red peppers, cucumbers, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, green bean, dill pickles, bread and butter pickles, cole slaw or chili peppers.
