Senokot-S Side Effects

Senokot-S is a combination of the stimulant laxative senna and the stool softener docusate. Senokot-S is an over-the-counter drug designed to treat occasional constipation. It works by bringing more water to the stool to allow it to become soft and easier to pass. As with any medication, Senokot-S has the potential for side effects.

Common Side Effects

Most individuals experience few, if any side effects when using Senokot-S. Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer, indicates that less than 4 percent of individuals experience the most common side effects with normal doses of the medicine. Drugs.com identifies the most commonly occurring side effects to be diarrhea, cramps. nausea and burping. The medication can cause more frequent bowel movements, some of which may be watery. This is not considered a negative side effect unless cramping or bleeding accompany the bowel movements.

More Serious Side Effects

The rate of serious side effect occurrence is less than 1 percent, according to Purdue Pharma. According to PDRHealth.com, serious side effects may include rectal bleeding, skin rash and the discoloration of urine. Drugs.com also identifies other serious hazards as black and/or tarry stools or severe stomach pain. A patient should call a doctor immediately if experiencing any of these side effects.
Some may experience an allergic reaction or a sensitivity to the medication. Signs of severe allergy require medical attention. Drugs.com states these symptoms include a rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, swelling of the lips, swelling of the throat or swelling of the tongue. Anaphylaxis can result, which is deadly when left untreated.

Complications

Per PDRHealth.com and Drugs.com, a patient should not take this drug for more than seven days unless directed by a doctor. If taken too long, Senoket-S can cause bowel damage and be habit-forming.
