Xalatan is the brand name for latanoprost, a drug used to treat certain kinds of glaucoma. It can also be prescribed to treat eye hypertension. According to Drugs.com, the medication works by increasing the passing of fluid from the eye that allows pressure to decline. It is available by prescription only. As with any medication, Xalatan has the potential for side effects.
Common Side Effects
Many individuals will experience few, if any side effects when using Xalatan. The most commonly occurring side effects listed by Drugs.com include blurred vision, irritation of the eyes, excess tear production, eyelid darkening, increase in brown color in the iris and improved eyelash length, thickness and darkness. RxList.com also suggests common effects to be eye burning, sensation of something in the eye, eye itching or stinging.
Less Common Side Effects
Some users will experience pain in the chest, cold-like symptoms, flu-like symptoms, pain in the eye, pain in muscles, pain in joints, pain in the back or skin rash, as indicated by RxList.com. Drugs.com also indicates potential side effects to be crusting over the eyelid, redness of the eye, swelling of the eye, dry eye and/or discomfort or pain of the eye. Rare Side Effects
Drugs.com points out that in very few cases, individuals may develop the following side effects: cough, trouble breathing, noisy breathing, redness of the eye, redness of the inner eyelid, shortness of breath, swelling of the eye, tightness in the chest or wheezing.
