Uses for Zinc Oxide Ointment USP

Zinc oxide is a medicinal compound most commonly found in many diaper rash creams, sun block and sunscreen preparations, and some supplements. It is a thick, white cream sold over the counter and comes in tubes or jars of varying sizes.

Minor Skin Irritations

According to Drug3K.com, zinc oxide ointment is used for the prevention or treatment of minor skin problems, for example cuts, poison ivy, burns and diaper rash.

Diaper Rash

Zinc oxide is an excellent ointment for use with diaper rash, says Drugs.com. The compound is often found in brand-name diaper rash preparations. It is also available straight, by itself in tubes for a soothing treatment for sore baby bottoms. It is waterproof so creates a barrier against future irritation if used regularly. Because the straight zinc oxide cream is unscented, it is excellent for babies who are sensitive to perfumes and other scents used in diaper-rash creams.

Sun Block

Because the ointment is thick and opaque reflecting and scattering light, it makes an excellent sun block. It is also waterproof, so will stay where it's put on the body during swimming and if a person is sweating.

Poison Ivy, Eczema

EMed.TV says zinc oxide ointment is a mild astringent and antiseptic, so is useful for drying up weeping, oozing skin eruptions such as poison ivy, boils and eczema.

How to Use

Apply a generous amount of ointment to skin areas where inflammation appears. For diaper rash, apply in a thin, even coat on the buttocks, legs and other sensitive parts to soothe the skin and act as a barrier against further irritation from urine. To use as a sun block, apply in a thick coat on the nose or other areas of the body to prevent the sun's rays from reaching the skin. Avoid getting in the eyes.
