Side Effects of Zinc Oxide Ointment

The medicinal compound zinc oxide has several uses for treatment of minor skin irritation, for protection from sun exposure, and for treatment of diaper rash, eczema, cuts and burns. There is no standard dosage for zinc oxide in cream form, but in some sensitive people there may be side effects or possible interactions with other products.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate zinc oxide ointment very well, according to Drugs.com; however, there are a few side effects that may occur for some people who are sensitive to the compound. These may include itching, burning, stinging, tingling and possible darkening of the skin. If using zinc oxide in commercial diaper rash creams, these skin reactions may be in part a sensitivity to the perfume or scent in the creams. Try the plain, unscented ointment.

Drug Interactions

There are no known drug interactions with zinc oxide ointment, according to Drugs.com.

Precautions

Do not use zinc oxide if you know you are allergic to any of the substances in the ointment. If side effects appear, stop using the ointment immediately and notify your doctor. If using the ointment as a sun block, avoid the eyes. Recommended for external use only.
