If you've developed a spare tire around your stomach, it might be due to your age. As you get older, you may become less active, which may cause weight gain around your middle. A large belly may put you at risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke, so the sooner you lose that extra weight, the better. Talk to your doctor before starting a new diet or exercise plan, especially if you have health concerns or injuries.

Cut Those Calories

Weight loss is the most effective way for men to lose belly fat. To lose weight, reduce your portion sizes and fill up with healthier foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. To lose weight, you must burn more calories than you're eating, which you can accomplish by eating less and exercising more. If you regularly drink soda, cutting one soda per day out of your diet could provide enough of a calorie deficit to help you lose approximately 12 lbs. a year.

Exercise More

If you're not the type to exercise, now is the time to start. Cardio exercises, the types of exercise that get the heart beating quickly, will help you burn more calories than exercises like weight lifting. Cardio exercises include running, swimming and rollerblading. The more calories you burn, the more weight you lose. Aim to get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity to stay healthy.

Tone With Strength-Training

Strength-training exercises, like lifting weights won't cause weight loss, but they may help speed up your metabolism. Doing situps and crunches may help tone your abdominal muscles and make them look flatter and more defined, but they won't help you lose belly fat. Do strength-training exercises approximately three times a week to tighten and tone your muscles.

Stop Drinking Alcohol

You don't have to drink beer to get a beer belly. You may experience an accumulation in belly fat if you regularly drink any type of alcohol, including beer. Alcohol is high in calories, which may cause additional weight gain. Limit your alcoholic beverages to one or fewer drinks per day to reduce the weight you've put on due to drinking. You'll also be less likely to gain additional belly fat if you're not drinking.
