The Side Effects of CoQ10 400Mg

Coenzyme Q-10, or CoQ10, is a product made in the body and is necessary for basic cell functions. The level of CoQ10 naturally decreases as a person ages and people who suffer from chronic diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, may have low levels. Taking supplemental forms of CoQ10 may increase the levels, but it is not certain if replacing low levels can offer any benefits, according to MayoClinic.com. The FDA does not regulate the manufacturing of supplemental medications, including CoQ10 and multiple dosages are available from different companies. Mitochondrial disorders may require 400 mg or greater doses of CoQ10 each day. Always consult your health care professional before taking any supplements because of potential adverse reactions and complications.

Low Blood Sugar

CoQ10 400 mg may lower blood sugar levels in the body. Individuals who suffer from diabetes or who have hypoglycemia may experience dangerously lowered blood sugar. Close monitoring of blood sugar levels is necessary to prevent serious complications such as seizures, fainting and coma.

Low Blood Pressure

Taking supplemental CoQ10 may cause a decrease in blood pressure. People who experience low blood pressure may have symptoms such as dizziness or fainting. Dividing the dose into multiple smaller doses and spreading the supplement out over the course of the day may help decrease the side effects, according to RxList. Blood pressure problems may also occur when taking CoQ10 400 mg before or after a surgical procedure.

Gastrointestinal Distress

Mild side effects associated with taking 400 mg of CoQ10 include symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. The symptoms include upset stomach, decreased appetite, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. These symptoms may decrease if a person continues to take the supplement.

Allergic Reaction

Some people may experience an allergic reaction, manifested as a skin rash when taking supplemental CoQ10 400 mg. The rash may cause symptoms such as redness on the skin, as well as itching and pain. Hives may also occur if an allergic reaction occurs from the supplement. Additional symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest and swelling of the airway.

Sleeping Problems

Taking CoQ10 400 mg may cause a person to experience difficulty sleeping. Insomnia may occur, causing an inability to fall asleep or waking early and being unable to get back to sleep.
