Biking is a physical activity that works the joints of the ankles not only while pedaling, but also when mounting and dismounting from the bike. Stiffness in the ankles after riding a bike might result from existing joint problems or from injuries sustained during the bike ride. Fortunately, most cases of stiffness of the ankle after riding a bike are preventable through behavior changes and treatable with home and medical care.
Features
After biking, ankle stiffness might interfere with other physical activities, such as dancing, climbing stairs or walking. Some people might experience a reduction in the range of motion of the ankle joint due to the stiffness. In addition to stiffness of the ankle joint, some patients might experience swelling and pain around the ankle. Bruising might also occur, and the bruising might spread from around the ankle to the Achilles' tendon, heel or toes.
Causes
Riding a bike that is too big can cause the rider to sprain the ankle when getting off the bike, which can lead to stiffness in the ankle joint. In addition, dismounting from the bike and stepping on a log, rock or another unstable object can also sprain the ankle and cause stiffness. People with medical conditions, such as osteoarthritis, might experience stiffness in the ankle joint after riding a bike. Riding a bike for a long period might also cause inflammation, sprains or tears in the ligaments and cartilage that support the ankle, resulting in stiffness and pain.
Treatments
If osteoarthritis is the cause of the stiff ankle joint, doctors recommend medications such as acetaminophen or a capsaicin cream to reduce stiffness and pain. Stiffness caused by mild sprains to the ankle are treatable at home with the RICE method: rest, ice, compression and elevation of the ankle above the level of the heart. Wrapping a fabric bandage around the ankle can help provide support to a stiff or painful joint. In addition, acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help reduce stiffness and swelling. If the bike rider is unable to bear weight or walk easily, doctors might prescribe the use of crutches, canes, braces or other assistive devices. In rare cases, doctors might perform surgery on a stiff ankle joint to repair a severe injury.
Prevention
People with osteoarthritis might consider taking acetaminophen or aspirin before a bike ride to prevent stiffness in the ankle joint from developing. Warming up before a bike ride can also help prevent stiffness in the ankle joint. In addition, wrapping the ankle with an elastic compression bandage before biking and wearing supportive and properly fitting shoes can also help prevent injuries that can lead to stiffness in the ankle.
