Joint pain is a common complaint, especially as people age. Typically caused by arthritis, joint pain can strike wrists, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, fingers and toes, and can significantly interfere with your daily activities. While joint pain can require medication, physical therapy or even surgery for improvement, many people are interested in natural remedies for their pain. One remedy that appears promising is fish oil. If you choose to try fish oil for joint pain, check with your doctor first to make sure it is an appropriate option for you.
Step 1
Eat fatty fish. Fish such as salmon, tuna, lake trout, mackerel, sardines and herring are rich sources of healthy fish oil. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fatty fish per week for optimal health.
Step 2
Try a fish oil liquid supplement. Although more research is still needed, the University of Maryland Medical Center notes that fish oil appears to be beneficial for arthritis joint pain. Speak to your doctor for dosing recommendations, and keep your fish oil liquid refrigerated.
Step 3
Take a fish oil capsule. If you do not like fish or the taste of fish oil, a capsule supplement may be better for you. Look for one that is free of mercury and other heavy metals, and, as with fish oil liquid, check with your physician for the best dosage to treat your joint pain.
