Lutein belongs to the carotenoid family, a group of vitamin A-related compounds that may be able to reduce the risk of certain cancers, heart disease and eye degeneration, reports the International Carotenoid Society. You can get lutein from certain foods as well as from dietary supplements found in the pharmacy.

Lutein

Lutein is a pigment found in large amounts in brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes, corn, tomatoes and spinach. Acting as an antioxidant, lutein helps counteract the damage caused by free radicals, keeping cells healthy and protecting against illness and disease.

Daily Requirements

Since the body does not make lutien on its own, you must get the compound from foods or supplements. The Lutein Information Bureau recommends consuming at least 6 mg to 10 mg of lutein daily, although most Americans only get around 2 mg of lutein daily. Vibrantly colored vegetables are good sources, but eggs are a better source of lutein, according to the USDA. Components in egg yolks, including lutein, are absorbed more readily in your bloodstream.

Lutein and Eyes

Lutein is concentrated in the retina of the eye and is therefore essential for good vision. The antioxidants in lutein help protect the eye from oxidative damage. People who are at risk of developing glaucoma, a family of eye diseases that can impair vision and lead to blindness, often take lutein supplements to support eye health.

Considerations

Although lutein is safe when consumed in moderate amounts, you should always discuss any medications or therapies with a trusted health care provider. Additionally, your doctor or pharmacist can warn you of any potential drug interactions that may occur with lutein. If you plan to modify your diet to incorporate more lutein, ask your doctor or dietitian about which foods are best for you; consuming too many eggs might increase cholesterol levels.
