Maintaining a sanitary yoga mat is important for novice and veteran yogis alike. Due to increased popularity, yoga mats now come in varied textures and materials, some of which may require specific cleaning products and methods. While it is generally best to clean your mat using the method explained in the manufacturer's instructions, some hand cleaning methods are gentle enough that they can be performed on practically any yoga mat.

Yoga Mat Types

The traditional sticky yoga mat sold in most studios and online stores is made from a combination of plastic, latex and PVC. The GaiamLife website notes that newer yoga mats come in eco-friendly styles, materials, textures and thicknesses but may make cleaning your yoga mat slightly more complicated.

Machine Washing

If your yoga mat is a standard PVC, latex and plastic mat, it can be unrolled and placed in a washing machine. Select a gentle cycle and wrap your mat around the central washing pivot to ensure that both sides receive an even wash. Add 1 to 2 tsp. of a mild laundry detergent and let the mat air dry when finished.

Washing By Hand

For a gentle cleaning method that can be used on any mat, fill a spray bottle with warm water and add 1 to 2 tbsp. of dish soap. Shake the bottle firmly and spray both sides of the mat while scrubbing it down with a wet sponge. If you practice Bikram or other hot yogas, a dash of lavender or tea tree essential oil might assist in breaking up any lingering body odor on your mat. When finished, rub both sides of your yoga mat with a dry terrycloth towel and let it air dry.

Soap and Detergent Warning

"Yoga Journal" notes that excess soap and detergent can leave a faint residue on the yoga mat, causing it to become slippery during future use. If you find yourself slipping on a generally sticky mat, submerge your mat in hot water for 15 minutes before rubbing it down with a dry terrycloth towel. Once the mat has become fully dry, lay it on the floor and step on to ensure that the stickiness has returned and the residue has been cleaned.
