Toning exercises can do more than just improve a teenage girl's appearance. They can also help build muscle tone which boosts metabolism and encourages weight loss. In addition, toning exercises can increase physical endurance, making it easier to stay active and burn calories throughout the day.
Pushups
Start on your stomach with your knees bent at a 45 degree angle, resting your weight on your palms and kneecaps. Your hands should be directly below your shoulders. Inhale and slowly bend your elbows and lower your body toward the ground. Exhale when your face is about 2 inches away from the floor and push yourself back up into the start position. Keep your abdominal muscles contracted and your back straight throughout the entire exercise. Repeat eight times.
Criss Cross
To trim the waist area, lie on the floor and position your hands on the back of your neck or head. Bring your head, neck and shoulders up from the floor and pull your knees up toward your chest area. Extend out your left leg while you touch your left elbow to the inside of your right knee. Switch legs, touching the right elbow to your left knee. Continue for up to 12 repetitions.
Squats
Stand with your knees slightly bent and feet hip-width apart. Inhale and squat backward as if you were sitting in a chair, bending your knees and contracting the muscles in your thighs. Press all of your weight into your heels instead of your toes. Breathe out and stand back up, squeezing your gluteus and hamstring muscles as you come back into the start position. Repeat for a total of eight squats.
Twist Lunges
Twist lunges work multiple muscle groups at once, helping tone your waist, abdominals, arms, legs and butt area. Hold a pair of weights or a medicine ball in front of you at chest height. Lunge forward with your left leg and twist your upper body at the bottom of the lunge, making sure to keep your arms straight and rigid. Return to the start position and repeat with the right leg. Continue alternating and twisting for up to 18 lunges.
