Ashtanga yoga is a style of yoga created by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, who lived from 1915 to 2009. This method of yoga follows three set series of poses, each one progressively more difficult than the next. The basic Ashtanga teacher certification course covers the primary series. Advanced teacher training courses focus on the second and third series.

Preparation

Before starting an Ashtanga teacher training course, you must be physically prepared and have experience with Ashtanga yoga. It is recommended to practice an Ashtanga yoga series three to six times a week for several months before attending a teacher certification program. Aspiring students can take classes with a certified teacher, follow an Ashtanga book or use an Ashtanga DVD to gain experience.

Application

Decide where you want to take your Ashtanga teacher certification course. Courses are offered in countries around the world including the United States, Canada and India. Follow the application process as outlined by your chosen school. Programs are often booked to capacity months in advance, so apply early.

Course Curriculum

The bulk of the course curriculum for your Ashtanga teacher certification consists of perfecting the postures of the primary series. Other essential topics include vinyasa, bandhas, drishti and oujaii pranayama. A vinyasa is a system of inhaling and exhaling while performing yoga movements. Bandhas are locks that direct and contain prana, which is the energy flowing in your body. Drishti tells you where to direct your gaze during each posture. Oujaii pranayama is the prescribed way to breathe through your nose while you perform the required postures.

Length of Courses

Ashtanga teacher certification programs offer a 200- or 500-hour course. Complete the 200-hour course for a basic certification and a 500-hour course for an advanced certification. Many courses are given over a period of one month while you live and study at the school. However, the setup is variable depending on the program you choose.

National Certification

After completing the course work, your school will issue a certificate to you that qualifies you to teach Ashtanga yoga. However, to obtain a national certification, which is required by some employers, you must register with the Yoga Alliance. To register with the Yoga Alliance, you must submit the required paperwork and fees. If your school is certified by the Yoga Alliance, you can register online. If you attended an uncertified school, you must submit the required forms via post.
