5 Things You Need to Know About Kids' Yoga

1. Yoga for Kids, Toddlers to Teens

Kids have joined the yoga craze. Actually, yoga has been around for centuries, so it's only natural that yoga and kids would meet. Kids as young as three years old and up through the teenage years are participating in yoga. The very young yoga enthusiasts need a program that incorporates art, music, puppets and other teaching tools to introduce them to the world of yoga. The older children and up through the teens can participate in yoga classes and programs much like those of adults.

2. Come Prepared For Yoga Class

Yoga kids will need much the same type of equipment as adults. Parents should invest in a good-quality yoga mat for their child if the class or studio does not provide one. They'll need a mat that grips the floor well, so that it doesn't move around as the child learns to do the yoga poses. Kids in yoga will need to wear comfortable clothing that clings to the body. Many of the poses involve bending over or even being upside down, so you don't want their shirt to fall back down over their heads. Exercise or dance clothing is perfect for young children learning yoga.

3. Healthy Benefits to Kids Yoga

Yoga is a healthy sport for a child to participate in as it develops flexibility with the basic stretching involved. It also helps children to learn to concentrate, to focus and to have better posture. Yoga is a great way for children to tone and strengthen their muscles that are still developing in their growing bodies. Children learn about basic anatomy, about nature and animals, as many of the yoga poses are inspired by nature and animals.

4. Injury Risks Are Low

Yoga has a relatively low risk of injury, but there is always the possibility of injury as there is in all sports. Injuries of children in yoga are mostly due to the children attempting poses they are not yet ready for, so they pull or strain a muscle. It's important that the instructor of a kids' yoga class is properly trained in yoga for children of the age that is being taught. In addition, parents should monitor their children practicing yoga to make sure that they are not attempting poses in an incorrect method or poses they should not be doing.

5. Calm the Child Within

Children reap rewards from yoga that they aren't even aware of. Yoga teaches patience, relaxation and helps children to find and understand an inner peace or inner calm. Yoga helps develop self-confidence in a child, expands their imagination and creativity. Children learn to have an open mind, open heart and respect for oneself as well as others. Yoga can even be a spiritual lifting for a child depending upon the class and support of the family.
