Lexapro is an oral antidepressant medication in the family of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. It is prescribed to balance chemicals in the brain to treat anxiety and major depression disorders in adults and teenagers. DHEA, dehydroepiandrosterone, is a natural hormone produced in the body. It is also supplemented for its therapeutic effects, thought to include slowed aging, improved memory and concentration, increased muscle mass, strength and energy, and for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It works by increasing production of hormones in the body. Though Lexapro and DHEA are not considered to adversely interact or cancel effects if taken together, consult your doctor before combining these or any other medications.
Step 1
Consult your doctor regarding how Lexapro works, how long it needs to be taken and possible side effects. Inform your doctor of any supplements you are taking concurrently. Your doctor may advise you to cease taking some supplements until you are comfortable taking Lexapro and your depression symptoms are under control.
Step 2
Take the prescribed dose of Lexapro, which is a 5, 10 or 20 mg tablet of this medication. Check the ingredients on the medication to ensure that you are not allergic to any of the nonactive ingredients.Take Lexapro once a day, in the morning or evening, but at the same time every day. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Take Lexapro with or without food.
Step 3
Purchase DHEA supplements from a health food store, if your doctor advises that it is safe and beneficial for you to begin these supplements. Take 50 to 100 mg of DHEA. Stop taking this supplement after three to four months as it should not be taken for long durations. A patient who is taking Lexapro to treat depression and anxiety might, for example, be advised to try DHEA supplements for erectile dysfunction or other reasons.
Step 4
Continue to talk to your doctor about Lexapro and its effects on your mental state. Discuss whether you should continue on this medication and dosage.
Tips and Warnings
- Though there are no direct indications to avoid taking Lexapro and DHEA at the same time, it is best to begin one medication at a time to ensure that it does not cause adverse side effects and interactions. DHEA affects hormone levels, which may cause changes in mood, affecting Lexapro's results in treating anxiety and depression.
- Seek urgent medical care if you take too much Lexapro. Overdosing can cause vomiting, nausea, sweating, tremors, fast heart rate, dizziness, seizures, confusion and coma. Initial effects of Lexapro sometimes include suicidal thoughts; see your doctor regularly during the first 12 weeks on this medication. Pregnant and nursing mothers should not take this drug.
