Healthy Eating to Prevent Cancer

Cancer cells can invade almost any vital organ in your body. Sometimes this is the result of living in a polluted environment, hereditary predisposition or habits such as alcohol consumption or smoking. Fortunately, your diet can play a pivotal role in cancer prevention. There are many super foods that should be on your list for your next grocery store visit.

Monounsaturated Fats

Fats are usually cast in a negative light when they pertain to cancer. However, there are some fats that actually help lower the risk of cancer. Good fats such as monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids should be incorporated into your diet. Avocados, almonds, pecans and olive oil contain monounsaturated fats and fight off cancer cells. Foods such as tuna, salmon, anchovies and flaxseed oil contain omega 3 fats and reduce inflammation in your body.

Fiber

Fiber is one of the best nutrients to prevent cancer because it helps keep you satiated and regulates your digestive system. It binds waste products in your system, which also flushes carcinogens out of your body. Pears, apples, carrots and potatoes are some plant products that contain a lot of fiber. Whole-grain fiber sources include oat bran, brown rice, quinoa and whole grain breads.

Berries

You should consume a variety of berries, as they are rich in antioxidants, flavonoids and polyphenols. According to the Mayo Clinic, blueberries contain the most powerful antioxidants of all types of berries. Raspberries have ellagic acid and flavonoids, which combat free radical damage. Cranberries contain more phenols than any other type of berry, which lowers cholesterol and prevents cancer.

Dark Leafy Greens

Vegetables are an important component of cancer prevention. Dark green vegetables are some of the best because they are nutrient-dense. They are a rich source of folate, which helps with DNA repair and duplication. Along with folate, they are a significant source of iron, calcium and vitamins A, C and K. Spinach, collard greens and kale are some of the best dark leafy green vegetables to consume.
