In the Indian yogic tradition, Kundalini refers to the innate energy or life force present in all living beings. In people, Kundalini is believed to originate from the base of the spine in your first chakra, existing as a coil of energy that lies dormant until awakened. You don't need to be a follower of any type of Eastern philosophy to awaken your Kundalini, however. Most traditions believe there are four steps in the Kundalini-awakening process.
Awakening Stage
The awakening stage, also known as Arambha, is considered by many yogic practitioners to be the first step in the Kundalini-awakening process. In this stage, the shell of your coiled Kundalini energy is broken through chakra cleansing and the development of awareness. This can be performed through meditation, breathing, also known as pranayama and cultivating mindfulness. Chakra meditation and specific Kundalini-meditation techniques, in which you focus on opening your first chakra located at the base of your spine, can help to break the psychic bonds that keep your Kundalini energy entrapped.
Cleansing Stage
The cleansing stage, also known as Ghata, occurs when the energy from your first chakra begins to flow upward through the rest of your body and vertically into your six chakras, located along the central meridian of your body. In the cleansing stage, the Kundalini energy cleanses your heart chakra. This process is facilitated by placing conscious focus on pranayama techniques. During this stage, you may feel a rush of energy or feelings of warmth in the locations where Kundalini energy is working.
Absorption Stage
The absorption stage, also known as Pacihaya, the body is cleansed on a physical, spiritual and emotional level. This may involve specific meditation techniques, breathwork and yoga postures to promote cleansing of the body. You become aware of psychic blocks holding you back, through introspection and the development of insight to try to release these blocks to the awakening process.
Final Stage
The final stage, also known as Nishpatti or the realization stage, occurs when your Kundalini energy has cleansed your third-eye chakra and removed any blocks or holdings in this area. Meditation on removing the blockages in this area, breathwork focused on opening up your third-eye area and certain yoga poses can be helpful during this stage. When the third-eye chakra is open, the energy is almost ready to flow into and open your crown chakra, located at the top of your head. The awakening process is completed when Kundalini energy flows upward from your third-eye chakra, into your crown chakra and out the top of your head.
