The colon, or large intestine, is the part of the digestive tract where waste products from digested food are stored for elimination. Cleansing the colon is thought to remove toxins and stagnant waste to prevent or reduce symptoms of illnesses such as allergies, arthritis and nutrient deficiencies. The MayoClinic.com warns that colon irrigation and the use of enemas may be unnecessary in most cases. However, certain herbs can gently help remove toxins, pathogens and parasites and promote healthy bacteria in the colon. Consult your doctor before cleansing your colon herbally.

Step 1

Increase your garlic intake. Take two 200 mg of a garlic supplement three times a day. Add crushed or minced fresh garlic cloves to your food or ingest up to 4 g of fresh garlic per day as a supplement. Garlic is a popular herbal health supplement that contains antioxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic actions to help cleanse the colon and digestive tract.

Step 2

Take dried fennel seed. You can consume fennel seed on its own or as a supplement to cleanse the colon. Ingest a teaspoon of fennel seeds per day or add to your food. This herb is rich in fiber and facilitates healthy digestion and waste removal to cleanse the colon.

Step 3

Use psyllium seeds for cleansing. Add a tablespoon of ground psyllium seeds or husk to a glass of water or juice. Stir until smooth in consistency, and drink one to two glasses per day. Psyllium is a popular digestive herbal remedy and helps to expand the colon to promote the removal of mucous and toxins.

Step 4

Take licorice root. Try a 200 to 300 mg tablet of licorice root supplement three times a day before meals. Licorice root decreases bloating in the gastrointestinal tract and also has immune-boosting, antioxidant and gentle laxative effects to naturally cleanse the colon. However, the benefits of licorice root supplements have not been adequately studied. This herb may cause several side effects, including high blood pressure and headaches. Using deglycyrrhizinated licorice, or DGL, may help avoid some of these negative effects. Consult your doctor before using licorice supplements.

Tips and Warnings

  • Add fiber such as whole wheat grains, bran, oats and flaxseed to your diet to improve digestion and cleanse the intestinal tract by promoting healthy digestion and excretion.
  • Do not try more than one herbal colon cleanse at time, as they may have interactions and side effects.
