Playing basketball requires you to wear specially designed shoes that provide your feet with adequate stability, cushioning and support, to be able to run, stop and jump with comfort and safety. If your feet are wider than normal, you will need to find basketball shoes that are wide enough where the side-to-side fit of the sneakers is snug but not tight. Tight shoes will cut off the blood circulation to your feet, which is dangerous while you are playing basket ball. You need a fresh supply of blood to keep your feet active and able to respond to the demands of the game.

Women And Children

Women and children with wide feet looking for the proper basketball shoes have the advantage that they can often choose from a selection of basketball shoes made for men, since men tend to have wider feet. Although the style of the shoes may not be exactly what a child or woman would choose, having the basketball shoes fit correctly is more important than looks. In many cases, basketball shoes are designed with neutral colors, such as black, white and blue that do not look gender specific.

Specially Ordered

If you are unable to find basketball shoes wide enough for your feet, you will need to special order them from the manufacturer of your choosing. The advantage to special ordering your shoes from manufacturers, such as Adidas, Reebok and Nike, is that you can take advantage that they are being custom made and decide to personalize them to your taste in terms of materials, colors and images on the sides and back of the shoe.

Enough Space

You know that the shoes are wide enough for your wide feet when there is enough space between your foot and the inside of the shoe. Shoes that fit too tightly will not have this space, and they are likely to give you blisters after playing basketball. Wide-enough shoes will prevent you from getting bunions and calluses on your toes.

When To Try On The Shoes

Even if you know your feet are wider than normal, shop around for wide basketball shoes after you have been active during your day, because your feet tend to swell as you walk and run, so trying on shoes first thing in the morning may give you a false sense of whether the basketball shoes will be wide enough when you are actually playing. Also bring with you the socks you would normally wear for playing basketball and you're your pick only when the shoes fit comfortably. Avoid thinking you will adjust to a tight shoe or that the shoe will widen with use.
