Candidiasis, also known as yeast infection, occurs when you have an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida albicans. This fungus exists naturally in your mouth, vagina and stomach. When it is present in normal amounts, Candida albicans fungus causes no problems. Only when there is a population explosion among these single-celled organisms will you experience the symptoms characteristic of a yeast infection. Probiotics are also single-celled organisms, and they may help you fight off a yeast infection.

Causes of Yeast Infections

Though it is unclear what exactly prompts Candida albicans to proliferate, an overgrowth of the fungus is more likely to occur when you are pregnant, overweight or have a weakened immune system. Certain drugs such as antibiotics can also increase your likelihood of yeast infection, by decimating the population of beneficial bacteria, called normal flora, that normally occupies your intestines.

Probiotics

Probiotics are bacteria and yeasts that can be consumed live and are known to have beneficial effects on human health. Billions of these microbes inhabit your gastrointestinal tract, where they occupy your intestines and keep out harmful pathogens. Taking antibiotics can deplete your normal flora, leaving you prone to over-colonization by Candida albicans. Taking probiotics can help restore your normal flora and reduce your risk of yeast infection.

Types of Probiotics

Different strains of probiotic bacteria have different effects on human health. In order for probiotics to help treat your yeast infection, you must consume the right kind. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, two types of probiotic strain, Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium, may be helpful in relieving yeast infections. These probiotic strains are available as supplements, and are present in a number of different types of probiotic foods. Read the product labels to be sure you're getting the right type of probiotic for your condition.

Dosages

Probiotic supplements are available at most health food stores. Their dosages are listed according to the number of live probiotic organisms, called colony forming units, or CPUs, that should be consumed per day. A dosage of up to 10 billion live Lactobacillus acidophilus organisms or bifidobacterium daily is recommended to restore normal bowel function and reduce the risk of Candida albicans overgrowth. Consult your doctor before taking probiotic supplements.
