L-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid found in foods such as fish, meat and dairy. In the brain, L-tyrosine is a precursor to several neurotransmitters including epinephrine. These chemicals regulate many functions including mood, energy and appetite. L-tyrosine supplementation is not considered necessary since the body can produce its own, but may be beneficial for those suffering from a biological deficiency.
Thyroid
L-tyrosine is utilized by the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones triiodothyronine known as T3 and thyroxine known as T4. These hormones perform many functions including regulating the metabolism. The University of Maryland Medical Center indicates taking 500 mg of L-tyrosine up to three times a day may be helpful for under-active thyroid and conditions of hypothyroidism.
Depression
Low levels of L-tyrosine has been indicated in some individuals that suffer from low moods and depression. Sufficient levels of L-tyrosine are necessary for the production of catecholamines. Catecholamines are important in the regulation of mood and when released by the adrenal glands, govern the fight-or-flight response. The Nutritional Supplement Information Center indicates that supplementing L-tyrosine may be helpful for types of depression resulting from L-tyrosine deficiency.
Libido
L-tyrosine may be beneficial for a sluggish libido. L-tyrosine is a precursor to dopamine. Dopamine is the reward chemical of the brain and is thought to increase sexual desire. Dopamine is also thought to increase fatigue and may be useful for sexual dysfunction. There is currently no conclusive evidence to support these claims. As with all supplements, consult your doctor before taking L-tyrosine supplements.
Warnings
L-tyrosine competes for absorption with other amino acids. For this reason, The Nutritional Supplement Education Center recommends taking L-tyrosine before bedtime or in the absence of protein for maximum absorption. L-tyrosine supplements should not be taken by those on monoamine oxidase inhibitors. L-tyrosine also stimulates the thyroid gland, if you are prescribed thyroid hormone, consult your doctor before taking L-tyrosine supplements.
