Onychomycosis, also known as a fungal nail infection, is more common in adults than in children, notes the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Toenail infections commonly follow fungal infections of the feet. Herbal remedies may help treat your onychomycosis, although fungal nail infections can be extremely difficult to treat and may require other, more conventional treatment methods, as recommended by your doctor.
Onychomycosis
Fungal nail infections, notes the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, are responsible for roughly 50 percent of all nail problems, occur more frequently in men than in women and are about four times more common in your toenails than in your fingernails. Fungal nail infections, states NHS, may involve any part of your nail and are more common as you age. Common signs and symptoms of fungal nail infections include nail crumbling, debris located under your nail, and nail thickening and discoloration.
Helpful Herbal Remedies
Certain herbal remedies, when used topically, or applied to the affected area, may be helpful adjunct therapies in treating this condition. In "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," herbalist and naturopathic physician Sharol Tilgner says that several herbs have anti-fungal action and are used in treating fungal infections, including black walnut, yarrow, paracress, old man's beard and tea tree oil. Some of these herbs may also possess anti-inflammatory and anti-itching action.
Highlighted Remedy
Tea tree oil is a frequently prescribed herbal remedy in the treatment of onychomycosis. According to certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," tea tree oil is used topically in the treatment of fungal infections, wounds, acne, athlete's foot and many other conditions. Tea tree oil, notes MedlinePlus, is used for many health conditions, including onychomycosis, ringworm, burns, vaginal infections and insect bites. The essential oil from the leaves of the tea tree are used in herbal preparations.
Considerations
Serious health complications associated with fungal nail infections are rare, although onychomycosis may lead to skin infections and irreversible nail damage. Although most herbs may be safe and effective, not all herbs have been studied using contemporary scientific research methods. Herbs may cause side effects in some individuals. To learn more about herbal remedies and their potential health benefits and risks, schedule an appointment with a health care professional trained in botanical, or herbal, medicine.
