Types of Diet Modification

There are a number of reasons why you may feel that it is time to modify your diet. Perhaps you have been having digestive problems, you may wish to lose weight or you may be facing or recovering from surgery. Each of these situations requires a different type of dietary modification.

The Clear Liquid Diet

If you are about to have surgery, or recently did so, you will need to modify your current eating habits to a clear liquid diet. This type of diet consists completely of clear liquids such as water, gelatin, strained fruit juices, honey, plain broth such as bullion and clear sodas. If your doctor has recommended this diet prior to medical tests or procedures, it is so that you can maintain a nutritious diet, but there will be no undigested food in you digestive tract.

Low-Fat Diet

If you are trying to lose weight, you may want to modify your diet as well as exercise regularly. The best way to do this is to reduce the amount of processed foods you are eating, as these are often high in saturated fats, trans fats and refined sugars. These substances not only increase your weight gain, they are also bad for your health. Refined sugars can increase your risk of type II diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity and high blood pressure, notes Healthy.net.

Probiotic Supplements

If you suffer from a digestive disorder such as Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome or chronic constipation, your body may not be absorbing the nutrients from your diet as optimally as it should. In this case, you may wish to modify your diet by adding a probiotic supplement. Probiotics are beneficial, live bacteria that thrive in the gastrointestinal tract. They prevent the buildup of pathogenic bacteria and improve nutrient absorption. They can also reduce the symptoms of many digestive disorders.

Gout Diet

Gout is a painful form of arthritis. Although the condition requires medication, symptoms can be avoided by making dietary modifications. Gout occurs when you develop high levels of uric acid in your bloodstream. This causes the formation of crystals around your joints. Uric acid is made as your body breaks down purines. Many foods contain purines, and by removing them from your diet you can significantly reduce your gout symptoms. These foods include liver, kidneys, mushrooms, asparagus and anchovies, according to MayoClinic.com.
