Unfortunately, stress is a normal part of daily living. It does have its use in motivating you and keeping you focused your tasks. However, too much stress can affect your health, causing anxiety, nervousness and depression. Although the factors that cause stress and anxiety may be different for every person, the feelings and the effects they generate are the same. Anxiety can cause physical symptoms, including palpitations, shortness of breath and hot flashes. Consult your physician as there are some herbs that can help alleviate the feelings generated by stress and anxiety.
Valerian Root
Valerian has been used as an herbal remedy for hundreds of years. It is native to parts of Europe, but cultivated worldwide. The root of the plant, which contains volatile oils, is the part of the plant used medicinally. Valerian root is used to treat insomnia and anxiety. According to the University of Michigan Health System, the volatile oils, valerian's active components, are thought to work by binding to sedating receptors in the brain. Valerian can make you drowsy, so don't drive your car or operate machinery while taking it.
Lemon Balm
Lemon balm is another herb considered to have calming properties and its use dates back to the Middle Ages. Lemon balm is a member of the mint family of plants and its leaves are used in herbal preparations. When its aromatic leaves are rubbed they produce a lemony smell, which gives this herb its name. Lemon balm works by increasing a feeling of calm and alleviating symptoms of anxiety. Lemon balm is also used for insomnia. Don't take lemon balm while pregnant or nursing, or if you are taking other sedatives or thyroid medication.
Passionflower
Passionflower is a creeping vine which produces a vibrant purple flower. It is also called granadilla and maypop. There are over 400 species of passionflower, but the only one used in herbal preparations is Passiflora incarnata. Passionflower is typically used to relieve symptoms of anxiety and insomnia. AltMD states passionflower is often found in combination with valerian root and lemon balm; the standardized tea contains 40 percent valerian root, 30 percent lemon balm and 30 percent passionflower. Do not take passionflower if you are pregnant or if you are being treated with prescription anti-depressants.
Lavender
Lavender produces a lovely fragrance and is used in many scented soaps and shampoos, as well being used as a medicinal herb. Lavender is found growing in parts of the Mediterranean, Australia, Europe and the United States. An essential oil is derived from its violet-colored blossoms and is used for stress, anxiety and insomnia. Lavender is used in a tea or it can also be inhaled to enjoy its relaxing effects. The tea should be made using dried flowers; never take the oil internally as it is toxic. Do not use lavender if you are pregnant, nursing or taking anti-depressant medication.
